This week, I had a timely reminder that the main subject that I am teaching in any session, is not Music, but the child with whom I am working with. The lovely note received was timely though totally unexpected. I had not realised that the weekly interaction would mean that much to the child.
It reminded me a lot about Maslow’s hierarchy of needs ( you could read more about it here: https://www.simplypsychology.org/maslow.html) . Maslow discoursed about the different levels of needs a person requires before reaching the pinnacle of the hierarchy - that of self-actualization.
May this always be in the hearts of every educator and therapist alike - to align ourselves with our main subject of our lesson ( our students / clients) before focusing on the outcomes of our teaching subject ( music / maths /science etc).
